Hastoe Group: Turning strategy into something people could build

A large-scale LEGO® Serious Play® session designed to help colleagues connect to the business strategy, translate it into practice and create shared ownership across teams.

The challenge

Hastoe was bringing together around 100 colleagues from across the South of England for Connect Day, its annual all-colleague event.

The day centred around launching the organisation’s new business strategy. The ambition was to help people engage with it, understand what it meant in practice and leave with a clearer sense of how their role connected to the bigger picture.

The team wanted something more participative than a traditional strategy presentation. The experience needed to create discussion, encourage contribution and help the strategy feel meaningful beyond the day itself.

With colleagues from different functions, locations and day-to-day realities, the challenge was creating shared understanding rather than simply awareness.

What we delivered

We designed and facilitated a large-scale LEGO® Serious Play® experience built directly from Hastoe’s strategy and priorities.

Each table explored questions linked to their own context and day-to-day work, including:

  • what excellent delivery looks like in practice
    • what gets in the way
    • what needs to happen for the strategy to become part of everyday decisions

Teams built models to represent ideas, barriers, opportunities and success.

The focus was using metaphor, storytelling and discussion to surface perspectives that can be harder to access in a more traditional workshop format.

As the session developed, people started comparing interpretations, challenging assumptions and making connections across functions.

The quality and depth of discussion stood out.

Teams created detailed models that explored resident journeys, developments, systems of support, relationships and outcomes. The builds became a way for people to explain how they think as well as what they do.

The outcome

The strategy became easier to connect to and easier to talk about.

Teams left with a clearer understanding of the organisation’s priorities and a stronger sense of where their role fits within delivery.

There was more discussion across functions, more challenge and greater ownership of how the strategy translates into practice.

The session created space for people to move from receiving information to actively contributing to how success is defined and delivered.

It also created something tangible for teams to refer back to after the day itself.

Why it worked

LEGO® Serious Play® gave people a different way into strategic conversations.

Building models created a shared point of reference that made ideas easier to explain, challenge and develop.

For Hastoe, the value came from helping people connect strategy to everyday work and creating space for teams to shape what delivery looks like together.

"A truly inspiring afternoon. I'm now a total convert to the power of LEGO® Serious Play® to bring teams together and open up the conversations that matter. The dynamic you both bring is something else - you were both awesome."
