MISSION AND VALUES

Get clear on what you stand for. Then make it usable.

Values mean nothing until they're lived

Most organisations have values. The problem is most of them are too broad to be useful when things get hard.

Collaboration. Innovation. Integrity. All fine words. None of them tell you what to do when a high performer is undermining their team, or when a client is pushing you somewhere you don’t want to go, or when a leader needs to address behaviour that’s been quietly tolerated for too long.

The work isn’t writing them. It’s using them.

We help organisations discover or refine their mission and values, shape them around the stories their people are already living, and embed them into the everyday moments that matter: hiring, feedback, decisions and leadership behaviour.

Bottom up

every process starts with what your people are already saying, not what leadership wants to hear

Off the walls

the goal is values that show up in decisions, conversations and leadership behaviour every day

"HappyHQ proved to be the perfect partner in helping us amplify our core values and guiding us through the necessary steps to achieve complete clarity."

Useful on Monday

Values on a wall change nothing. Values in a conversation change everything.

Most organisations don’t have a values problem. They have an application problem. The values exist. They were announced. They might even be on the website. But when things get difficult, when a decision is hard, when a conversation is uncomfortable, when a hire doesn’t feel right but nobody can say why, the values aren’t in the room.

That’s what we’re here to fix. Not the words. How the words get used.

How this works

Discovery through stories. Clarity through people.

01

Discovery
We start by listening. Before any workshop or writing session, we talk to your people. What makes this place distinctive? What are you proud of? When have you seen the organisation at its best? The stories that come back are where the values already live, usually long before anyone has named them.

02

Shaping
We bring everything together in a facilitated session that’s energising, not exhausting. Leadership and team working through the themes the discovery surfaced, stress-testing the language against the moments that matter. The question throughout is not “does this sound good?” but “would this actually help you make a decision?”

03

Defining
Values leave the room with behaviours attached. What does this value look like in practice? What does it not look like? What decision does it force? What behaviour does it reject? This is what makes them usable in hiring, feedback, performance conversations and everyday leadership.

04

Embedding

We help you bring the values to life beyond the launch. That might be a values playbook, manager training, an all-team immersive session, or a roadmap for keeping values visible as the organisation grows. The goal is values that are still showing up in conversations twelve months later.

In practice

Built from what your people already know

One of our most powerful pieces of work started not in a leadership meeting but with team members being asked a single question: what makes this place distinctive?

“Genuine” came back again and again. So did “care,” “personal,” and “we always stay human.” The pride in the place and its people came through in almost every response.

The leadership session that followed didn’t write the mission. It named what was already there.

That’s the approach. Discovery first. Language second. The best missions and values don’t come from consultants writing in a room. They come from paying proper attention to the people already living them.

"This wasn’t just about one away day - HappyHQ has helped us create a solid foundation to shape our narrative. I would highly recommend their expertise to any company looking to align their team and culture."

Example tools we use

Simple tools. Specific outcomes. Useful on Monday.

01

The pressure test
What decision does this value force? What behaviour does it reject? What trade-off does it create?

02

Story harvesting
Surfacing the moments where your culture is already working, and using them to shape the language

03

Behaviours mapping
Turning values into specific actions: what it looks like, what it doesn’t look like, what it sounds like in a feedback conversation

04

The opposites exercise
Defining what your values are not, which is often the most clarifying thing you can do

05

Embedding roadmap
How values show up in hiring, onboarding, feedback, recognition, meetings and leadership

06

Mission architecture

Shaping a north star that guides decisions and behaviour, not just sits on the about page

Why people love it

What changes, and why it stays changed

01
It comes from your people, not a template
The discovery process means the values reflect how your organisation thinks and talks. People see themselves in them, which is what makes them stick.
02
The work is useful on Monday
Values leave with behaviours attached. Not a poster. A practical guide to what each value means in hiring, feedback, difficult conversations and everyday decisions.
03
It sticks because it's embedded, not announced

A launch is a starting point. We help you build the habits, conversations and leadership behaviours that keep values alive long after the workshop.

04
It changes what happens in the hard moments
Values only prove themselves when things get difficult. When they’re specific enough and lived enough, they give people a reference point when a situation is unclear, uncomfortable or genuinely hard.
Who this is for

For organisations ready to go beyond the words

Whether you’re defining your values for the first time, refreshing ones that have stopped feeling true, or trying to close the gap between what you say and how you work, this is designed around you.

What changes

Values that people can actually feel

“Thank you to the HappyHQ team for bringing such energy and expertise to HBD. Even during an incredibly busy period, not a single person disengaged or used the workshop as an excuse to step away from deadlines. Everyone arrived and left smiling and that’s a true testament to what HappyHQ created in the room.”
